Google Unveils ‘AI Mode’ in Major Search Engine Overhaul

At its annual developers’ conference, Google announced the U.S. rollout of “AI Mode,” a feature designed to make search queries feel like expert conversations, Arab News reported. This follows a 2.5-month testing period and integrates Gemini 2.5 into search algorithms. The update aims to handle complex queries, with 1.5 billion users already engaging with AI-generated summaries (“AI Overviews”). However, BrightEdge reports a 30% drop in clickthrough rates to external websites, as users rely more on AI responses.
Google also revealed plans to re-enter the smart glasses market with Android XR-powered spectacles, developed with Gentle Monster and Warby Parker. These glasses will feature voice-controlled AI assistants, competing with Meta’s Ray-Ban products.
Despite legal challenges over its search monopoly, Google maintains dominance with 136 billion monthly visits—far surpassing ChatGPT’s 4 billion. CEO Sundar Pichai emphasized AI’s role in reshaping information access, though critics warn of reduced traffic for publishers.
Upcoming tests include AI-driven ticket purchases, live video searches, and “Deep Search” for complex topics. A premium “Ultra” subscription ($250/month) will offer 30TB storage and exclusive AI tools, signaling Google’s aggressive investment in AI supremacy.
