WHO Establishes New Collaborating Centre for AI in Health Governance

The World Health Organization (WHO) has designated the Digital Ethics Centre at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands as a Collaborating Centre on artificial intelligence (AI) for health governance, the organization’s website reported. This centre aims to harness AI’s potential to enhance healthcare while ensuring ethical and responsible use.

Dr. Alain Labrique, WHO’s Director of Digital Health and Innovation, emphasized the necessity of strong partnerships to guide the ethical adoption of AI technologies. The Collaborating Centre will advance research on key topics, provide expert input for WHO guidance, and facilitate knowledge-sharing through workshops.

Professor Jeroen van den Hoven, Scientific Director at the Digital Ethics Centre, highlighted the centre’s commitment to integrating ethical values into digital technology design. The Responsible and Ethical AI for Healthcare Lab, a collaboration with Delft University, will address the challenges of implementing WHO guidance in clinical practice. This initiative underscores WHO’s dedication to promoting evidence-based AI governance in public health.
