Large-Scale mRNA Bird Flu Vaccine Trial Begins in UK and US

A large Phase 3 clinical trial testing an mRNA-based vaccine against avian influenza (H5N1) has begun in the United Kingdom and the United States, marking a major step in pandemic preparedness efforts.

The vaccine, developed by Moderna, is designed to protect against the H5N1 strain of bird flu, which has spread widely among birds and some mammal populations in recent years, raising global concern over potential human health risks.

According to trial details, approximately 4,000 adult volunteers are expected to be enrolled across sites in both countries. The study is assessing the vaccine’s safety and immune response as part of late-stage clinical testing.

The mRNA technology used in the candidate vaccine is the same platform used in COVID-19 vaccines and is being studied as a rapid-response tool for emerging infectious diseases.

Public health experts note that while H5N1 has not shown sustained human-to-human transmission, ongoing outbreaks in animal populations continue to drive research into preventive vaccines.

The trial represents one of the most advanced steps so far in developing a pre-pandemic influenza vaccine strategy using mRNA technology.
