Trio Wins Nobel Prize in Physics for Macroscopic Quantum Research

The 2025 Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded on Tuesday to three researchers: John Clarke (Briton), Michel H. Devoret (Frenchman), and John M. Martinis (American), Anadolu Agency reported.

The trio was honored for their groundbreaking research into quantum mechanics, specifically the “discovery of macroscopic quantum mechanical tunnelling and energy quantisation in an electric circuit.”

Working in the 1980s at the University of California, Berkeley, the laureates conducted experiments using an electrical circuit. Their work successfully demonstrated that the normally microscopic and bizarre properties of the quantum world—such as quantum tunneling (a particle passing through a barrier)—could be observed in a system large enough to be held in the hand. Their findings showed that these effects, which typically fade away when large numbers of particles are involved, can be made concrete at a larger scale.
