UV Technology Reduces Respiratory Infections in Elderly Care Facilities
————————————
A new study published in JAMA Internal Medicine suggests that readily available germicidal ultraviolet (GUV) technology can significantly reduce respiratory infections among residents in elderly care facilities, Anadolu Agency reported. The research, conducted by Flinders University in South Australia, found that GUV appliances led to a more than 12% decrease in overall viral respiratory infections across four participating nursing homes compared to standard conditions.
Researchers installed GUV devices in these facilities, where the technology works by emitting UVC rays that effectively deactivate airborne viruses and bacteria, thereby purifying the air. Lead author Andrew Shoubridge highlighted the ease of installation and cost-effectiveness of these GUV appliances. Senior author Geraint Rogers emphasized that this technology offers a practical and unobtrusive method to safeguard vulnerable individuals.
The two-year study concluded that GUV devices are safe, versatile, and effective in real-world elder care settings. This promising development offers a valuable addition to existing infection control measures, providing a robust tool to protect older adults from seasonal outbreaks and potential future pandemics.
