UK Scientists Develop Rapid DNA Sequencing to Combat Superbugs

UK scientists have introduced a groundbreaking DNA sequencing system aimed at combating the rise of antibiotic-resistant superbugs by diagnosing bacterial infections more quickly and accurately, The Guardian reported. Traditional methods can take up to seven days for results, often leading to the unnecessary use of broad-spectrum antibiotics, which can contribute to resistance.

The new system, developed by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and Barts Health NHS Trust, delivers results within 48 hours, allowing doctors to provide targeted treatments. Successfully trialed on 2,000 NHS patients, this approach enhances recovery rates and reduces complications like sepsis.

Dr. Chrysi Sergaki from the MHRA emphasized the importance of rapid sequencing in identifying infections, stating, “Every hour counts.” Ian Butler, lead clinical scientist at Barts, noted that the technology can detect infections even when bacteria levels are low due to prior antibiotic use. This innovation aims to improve patient outcomes and curb the spread of superbugs in hospitals, addressing a pressing global health threat.
