Revolutionary Anti-Aging Therapy Could Extend Lifespan by 25%

Scientists at Duke-NUS Medical School have identified interleukin-11 (IL11) as a key protein that accelerates aging, SciTech Daily reported on Monday.

Their research, published in Nature, shows that targeting IL11 with anti-IL11 therapy can reverse aging signs in preclinical models, potentially increasing lifespan by up to 25%. This breakthrough addresses critical aging-related issues such as frailty and cardiometabolic health.

The study revealed that higher IL11 levels lead to fat accumulation and muscle loss, common aging indicators. Anti-IL11 therapy not only enhances metabolism by converting harmful white fat to beneficial brown fat but also improves muscle function and reduces telomere shortening.

Senior author Stuart Cook emphasized the therapy’s potential for widespread use, aiming to improve healthy living globally. As life expectancy rises, effective interventions like this could significantly alleviate the societal and economic burdens of an aging population. The research involved collaboration with various international institutions.
