Honeybees Show Promise in Sniffing Out Lung Cancer
Researchers at Michigan State University have discovered a surprising talent in honeybees – the ability to detect lung cancer through scent, Science News reported yesterday.
By studying the electrical activity in bee brains, scientists were able to distinguish between healthy and cancerous breath samples with over 93% accuracy. This opens doors for potential applications in early cancer detection.
The study highlights the remarkable olfactory abilities of insects. Unlike complex electronic sensors, bees can differentiate between subtle odor variations, making them ideal for this task. While further research is needed, this finding suggests that bees could one day be used as living biosensors in cancer clinics.
