UN Chief Sends Eid Greetings with “Heavy Heart” as Millions Celebrate Amid Conflict

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres extended Eid al-Fitr greetings on Saturday, expressing his sentiments with “a heavy heart,” as millions of Muslims observe the holiday in the shadow of war and displacement, rather than enjoying traditional family gatherings, Anadolu Agency reported.

In a video statement shared on X, Guterres conveyed, “I want to express my best wishes for Eid al-Fitr to all Muslims around the world.” He added, “However, I do so with a heavy heart, reflecting on the many Muslims who are unable to celebrate Eid with their families because of war, conflict, or displacement.”

The UN chief highlighted the festival’s essential values of “solidarity and compassion,” hoping these principles could help mend divided communities. His message comes at a time when Palestinians in Gaza, Rohingya refugees, and other Muslim populations affected by conflict are facing particularly difficult celebrations amid ongoing violence and humanitarian crises.

Eid al-Fitr marks the conclusion of the holy month of Ramadan, traditionally celebrated with prayers, festive meals, and acts of charity. The Shia community around the world takes this opportunity to pray for the blessed reappearance of Imam al-Mahdi, peace be upon him.
