Shiites Worldwide Commemorate Sorrowful Martyrdom Anniversary of Sayyida Zaynab, peace be upon her

Sayyida Zaynab bint Ali, daughter of Amir al-Mo’mineen and Sayyida Fatimah al-Zahra, peace be upon them, played a pivotal role in the preservation of Islam and realization of the holy mission of Imam al-Hussein, peace be upon him, in the aftermath of the tragic events of Karbala.

Born in 5 A.H. in Medina, she was married to Ja’far ibn Abdullah and sacrificed her two sons before her Imam at Karbala. Her tragic martyrdom occurred on either 14th or 15th of Rajab al-Asab, marking a significant mourning day for the devotees of Ahl al-Bayt, peace be upon them.

Sayyida Zaynab’s courage and loyalty to her brother, Imam al-Hussein, were unwavering. She remained with him throughout his life, and after his martyrdom, she played a crucial role in carrying the message of Karbala to the world. She tended to the women and children after the massacre and actively disseminated the injustices faced by Imam Husayn’s family, peace be upon him. Her steadfastness and eloquence in the face of adversity are central to her significance.

Her powerful speeches and actions in the Umayyad court, particularly her responses to Ibn Ziyad, exposed the tyranny and cruelty of those responsible for the Karbala massacre. Her powerful words and spirit of unfaltering patience continue to inspire generations of Shia communities around the world, and beyond. Some of the most significant Husseini rituals, including the blood-letting ritual on the morning of Ashura, owe their existence to the singular grand-daughter of the Holy Prophet, peace be upon him and his pure family.

Sayyida Zaynab’s countless virtues included immense knowledge and wisdom, as illustrated in the famous words of Imam al-Sajjad (peace be upon him), chastity, eloquence, and unwavering faith. She embodies the spirit of martyrdom and sacrifice, showcasing the importance of standing up against injustice.

Her Majesty was reportedly laid to rest in the suburbs of Damascus, where her blessed tomb and shrine stand today, inviting thousands of pilgrims throughout the year to extend their allegiance to the daughter of the Commander of the Faithful.

It should be mentioned that Imam Hussein Media Group is broadcasting live coverage of al-Aqila Courtyard and mourning ceremonies in holy Karbala in honour and remembrance of her tragic martyrdom.
