Cardinal Seán O’Malley retires as Archbishop of Boston
Pope Francis’ main adviser on Clergy abuse, Cardinal Seán O’Malley, has retired as Archbishop of Boston, ABC news reported
Pope Francis has accepted Cardinal Seán O’Malley’s resignation as Archbishop of Boston. Richard Henning, who was the bishop of Providence, Rhode Island, has now replaced him.
This announcement by the Vatican didn’t mention O’Malley’s other role as the Pope’s main adviser on fighting clergy sexual abuse; O’Malley is also the head of Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors, suggesting that he will continue in this role until a suitable replacement is found.
Reflecting on his bishophood years, he states that “When I arrived it was a time of great crisis”, indicating that he has had a positive impact.
It should be mentioned that St. John Paul II had tapped O’Malley to take over in Boston in 2003 at the height of the clergy sexual abuse scandal that had exploded there following an investigation by The Boston Globe newspaper. Revelations of years of abuse and coverups by the church led to the downfall of then-archbishop Cardinal Bernard Law, who resigned in disgrace in December 2002.
