Archbishop Condemns Paris Olympics Ceremony for ‘Last Supper’ Parody
Archbishop Charles Scicluna of Malta has joined a wave of criticism against a controversial segment of the Paris Olympics’ opening ceremony, which featured drag queens parodying Leonardo da Vinci’s ‘Last Supper’, Anadolu Agency reported yesterday.
The Catholic Church has labeled this reinterpretation of the biblical scene as highly offensive. In a social media post, Scicluna expressed his disappointment, stating, “The gratuitous insult to the Eucharist during the opening ceremony has caused immense disappointment among many Christians.” He also urged others to voice their objections, having already communicated his concerns to the French ambassador to Malta.
The Conference of French Bishops echoed his sentiments, releasing a statement that condemned the ceremony for including “scenes of derision and mockery of Christianity, which we very deeply deplore.”
