A legal report monitors violations against Shia Muslims in several countries over the month
A monthly legal report has documented a series of violations against Shia Muslims in several countries, including restrictions on religious practices, arrests, and prison sentences, as well as incidents of kidnapping, murder, and armed attacks.
The International Organization for the Defense of Shia Rights stated that its report covers the period from early July to early August 2026, clarifying that the information contained within it is based on field reports, official data, and local and international human rights sources, with some results remaining preliminary and subject to update.
Afghanistan: Restrictions on places of worship and religious practices
In Afghanistan, the report highlighted the ongoing restrictions on the freedom to practice religious rituals, especially in the northeastern regions of the country, mentioning the closure and confiscation of dozens of places of worship belonging to Ismaili followers, alongside restrictions on holding certain Shia religious events.
It also noted arrests related to participation in Ashura ceremonies, amidst human rights concerns about the impact of these actions on freedom of belief and religious practices.
Pakistan: Attacks and kidnappings targeting Shia community members
In Pakistan, the report documented several security incidents targeting individuals and areas inhabited by Shia communities, including attacks carried out by extremist groups against civilians and their homes.
The report also recorded incidents of kidnapping and murder, including the killing of a young man after being abducted and tortured, as well as the kidnapping of two young men from the Hazara minority, whose fates remain unknown at the time of the report’s preparation.
Bahrain: Arrests and prison sentences
In Bahrain, arrests and judicial rulings constituted the majority of the documented violations in the report, which mentioned raids and arrests in various regions and towns targeting youths, minors, and religious and social figures.
The report also recorded the issuance of prison sentences of varying lengths against several detainees, with some instances leading to life imprisonment, alongside the imposition of financial fines. It also spoke of ongoing summoning, investigation, and arrest operations on different days throughout the month.
Egypt: Arrests related to religious activities
In Egypt, the report stated that dozens of individuals from the Shia component were arrested during July, noting one arrest campaign targeting Iraqi nationals following their participation in a mourning gathering held for a religious occasion.
It also mentioned another campaign affecting a number of citizens belonging to the Shia sect, including one media worker.
Syria: Killing, kidnapping, torture, and arrests
In Syria, the report documented a series of incidents ranging from murder, kidnapping, and the discovery of corpses showing signs of torture and gunfire, along with arrests and armed assaults in several provinces.
The report highlighted incidents leading to the deaths of civilians, including women, children, and the elderly, as well as recorded deaths linked to torture after arrest, civilian kidnappings, and injuries inflicted by armed groups.
It also reported on arrest campaigns and raids in a number of areas, along with the dismissal of several employees in coastal provinces, as part of a series of occurrences recorded during the month.
Saudi Arabia: A recorded case of arrest
In Saudi Arabia, the report noted a case of arrest in the Eastern Region, mentioning the raid of a citizen’s home and his arrest without clarification of the reasons, according to the legal report.
The organization affirmed in the preamble of its report that it refrained from including some cases due to insufficient evidence and credible indicators, emphasizing that its activities aim, as per its statement, to defend justice and equality and monitor violations faced by Shia Muslims.
