Shia Muslims Mark Birth of Imam al-Sajjad, Beacon of Conscious Worship and Moral Resistance

Shia communities are marking the birth anniversary of Imam Ali ibn al-Hussain, Imam al-Sajjad (peace be upon him), observed on the 5th of Sha’ban, as an occasion to reflect on a legacy that combined deep spirituality with social responsibility.

Born in Medina, Imam al-Sajjad was raised in the Household of Prophethood and witnessed some of the most painful chapters in Islamic history, including the tragedy of Karbala, where he survived to carry the message of Imam Hussain (peace be upon him). Known as Zayn al-Abidin and Sayyid al-Sajidin, his devotion to worship was not withdrawal from society, but a conscious path to reform hearts and awaken consciences under oppressive rule.

In the aftermath of Karbala, amid fear and political repression, Imam al-Sajjad adopted a wise and non-violent form of resistance. His powerful sermons in Kufa and Damascus exposed injustice and restored the moral narrative of Ashura.

His enduring works, including al-Sahifa al-Sajjadiyya and the Treatise on Rights, remain foundational texts on prayers, ethics, human dignity, and social justice. His Majesty perpetuated the tradition of shedding tears for the Master of the Martyrs and the Captives of Karbala as a gift to humanity.
