Turkish Expert Warns of Vitamin D Poisoning from Excessive Supplements

Uncontrolled use of vitamin D supplements can cause poisoning and serious health complications, Anadolu Agency reported citing a Turkish endocrinologist.

Prof. Dr. Mustafa Altay, a specialist in endocrinology and metabolic diseases at Ankara Training and Research Hospital, told Anadolu Agency that vitamin D levels above 100 nanograms per milliliter (ng/mL) pose significant risks. “Excessive and unsupervised intake can lead to toxic effects,” he said, noting that vitamin D accumulates in the body and is not easily excreted.

Altay highlighted that deficiency is common among people with limited sun exposure, particularly indoors workers. Symptoms include fatigue, muscle weakness, bone pain, and in severe cases, osteoporosis. Natural sources include fatty fish, egg yolk, liver, and mushrooms, but diet alone is often insufficient. Supplements should be used cautiously and under medical supervision, particularly for elderly individuals, children, and women.

Early signs of poisoning include high blood calcium, causing nausea, dehydration, and in severe cases, kidney injury, heart rhythm problems, and neurological symptoms. Medical attention is crucial if poisoning is suspected.

Sun exposure remains the safest way to maintain adequate vitamin D.
