US Health Chief Warns Alcohol Linked to Seven Cancers
U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy issued a stark warning on Monday about the dangers of alcohol consumption, linking it to at least seven types of cancer, including breast, colon, and liver cancers, Khaama Press reported.
Murthy emphasized that alcohol is the third leading cause of cancer in the United States, following tobacco and obesity, contributing to approximately 100,000 cancer cases and 20,000 deaths annually.
In response to these health risks, Murthy called for new warning labels on alcoholic beverages to inform the public about the cancer risks associated with drinking. His statements led to a 3% drop in stock prices for major alcohol producers. The final decision on labeling changes will be made by Congress, as current labels, mandated since 1988, warn about pregnancy and driving risks but are often overlooked due to their small print.
Murthy also urged a reevaluation of alcohol consumption guidelines, noting that even moderate drinking can pose health risks. The World Health Organization supports reducing alcohol consumption to mitigate cancer risks globally.
It should be mentioned that In Islam, the consumption of alcohol is strictly prohibited, as it is viewed as harmful to both individuals and society. The Quran explicitly forbids intoxicants, recognizing the adverse effects of alcohol on health, morality, and social cohesion.
