Rwanda Reports Eight Deaths from Marburg Virus Outbreak
Rwanda has confirmed eight deaths linked to the Marburg virus, a highly contagious disease similar to Ebola, following the declaration of an outbreak last Friday, Al Jazeera reported yesterday.
Health Minister Sabin Nsanzimana reported 26 confirmed cases, with most infections occurring among healthcare workers across six districts. The Marburg virus, originating in fruit bats, spreads through close contact with infected individuals and contaminated surfaces.
Authorities are intensifying contact tracing and testing efforts, urging the public to avoid physical contact to prevent further spread. Approximately 300 individuals who interacted with confirmed cases have been identified, with some placed in isolation facilities.
The World Health Organization is providing support to Rwandan authorities to help control the outbreak. Symptoms of the virus include fever, muscle pain, and severe gastrointestinal distress, potentially leading to extreme blood loss and death. The source of the outbreak remains undetermined as health officials work to contain the situation.
