Germany to Donate 100,000 Mpox Vaccine Doses to African Patients
Germany has announced the donation of 100,000 mpox vaccine doses from its military stockpile to combat an outbreak in Africa, Reuters reported yesterday.
This initiative aims to provide immediate assistance to affected nations, particularly the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Burundi, and surrounding East African countries. A government spokesperson confirmed that the donation is part of a broader effort to support the World Health Organization (WHO) in addressing the mpox crisis.
The German army has approximately 117,000 doses of the Jynneos vaccine, procured in 2022, and will retain a minimum stock for essential personnel.
The WHO has declared mpox a global public health emergency due to its rapid spread and the emergence of a new variant, clade Ib. Germany is also committed to providing flexible financial resources through various channels, including the GAVI vaccination alliance, to enhance vaccination efforts across the continent.
