Pope Leo XIV Calls for 24-Hour Global Christmas Ceasefire

Pope Leo XIV has called for a 24-hour global ceasefire over Christmas, urging warring parties, particularly in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, to observe a pause in hostilities.
According to IQNA, the pontiff made the appeal while leaving his residence in Castel Gandolfo, near Rome, en route to the Vatican, emphasizing that he is deeply concerned by Russia’s refusal to respect a Christmas ceasefire. He urged all people of goodwill to honor at least one day of peace in celebration of the birth of Jesus.
Pope Leo XIV also highlighted the fragile situation in the Gaza Strip, where a ceasefire established in October 2020 continues to shape local conditions. He expressed hope that ongoing peace efforts could progress, allowing residents to celebrate Christmas amid challenging circumstances.
While noting the human toll and destruction caused by armed conflict, the Pope called for renewed commitment to dialogue and reconciliation worldwide, urging global leaders to prioritize humanitarian relief and protection of civilians, particularly women and children.
