Marie Thurlkill, an American author and professor of religious studies at the University of Mississippi, has described Lady Fatima Zahra (peace be upon her), daughter of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), as “a radiant light and a guide for all,” emphasizing her enduring moral and spiritual significance across faith traditions.
In an interview with the International Quran News Agency (IQNA), Thurlkill—an expert in comparative religion and medieval Christianity—explored the deep parallels between Mary, mother of Jesus, and Fatima Zahra (sa), viewing both as sacred figures who embody purity, compassion, and resilience.
Thurlkill, author of Chosen Among Women: Mary and Fatima in Christianity and Shi‘ite Islam, argues that Fatima’s example transcends sectarian boundaries. “She continues to shine even in suffering,” she said, noting that Fatima’s perseverance and faith provide a universal model of spiritual strength.
Her research underscores that Fatima Zahra (sa) is not only a revered Muslim figure but also a moral and spiritual pillar whose message of justice, fidelity, and mercy can foster dialogue between Christians and Muslims.
Thurlkill concluded that studying Fatima with humility and respect reveals shared human values—faith, endurance, and compassion—that unite believers across civilizations.
