Faith Leaders Condemn Vandalism Against Melbourne Mosque and Other Religious Sites
————————————
A series of vandalism incidents targeting a Melbourne mosque and other religious sites have drawn strong condemnation from faith leaders across the city, Iqna.ir reported. An inner-city mosque reportedly experienced multiple break-ins, including instances where intruders urinated on stairs and verbally harassed worshippers in the women-only prayer area. The Islamic Council of Victoria (ICV) believes at least one of these incidents was motivated by anti-Muslim sentiment.
Religious communities, including the Anglican Church and the Victorian Council of Churches, have expressed significant concern over what they describe as a growing pattern of such incidents. They emphasize that these acts undermine community cohesion and heighten fear among worshippers.
The ICV stated that members of the Islamic community are experiencing anxiety but are collaborating with authorities to enhance safety measures. While the Victorian government has not issued an official statement on the broader incidents, Premier Jacinta Allan condemned the temple attack in a letter, labeling it a “deliberate act of hate” intended to spread fear and division.
