Five Pillars Exhibition Celebrates Muslim Identities, Culture

The Martin Hall Gallery is currently hosting the exhibition ‘Five Pillars: lived experiences, new futures’, which runs until April 3, Loughborough University reported. Open Monday to Thursday from 12 PM to 2 PM and Fridays from 12 PM to 3 PM, the exhibition highlights the Five Pillars of Islam: the Profession of Faith (shahada), Prayer (salat), Alms (zakat), Fasting (sawm), and Pilgrimage (hajj).

Curated by Dr. Kerri Akiwowo, Senior Lecturer in Textiles, the exhibition features works from students, doctoral researchers, alumni, and community members, aiming to raise awareness of Muslim lived experiences and envision new futures through diverse narratives and objects.

Supported by a research project led by Dr. Line Nyhagen and the Aziz Foundation, the exhibition promotes inclusivity and respect, essential for a thriving society.

A striking mural on the gallery’s glass frontage was designed by first-year graphic design student Muqaddas Yasin. Reflecting on their work, Yasin stated, “I aimed to convey personal journeys and informative visuals, exploring the history of Eastern Islamic art alongside Art Deco and Art Nouveau.” The design incorporates decorative elements and personal interpretations of the Five Pillars, fostering a sense of community connection.

This exhibition is a vital step in celebrating and understanding Islamic culture within the broader societal context.
