War Remnants Continue to Kill in Syria, Leaving 253 Dead and 389 Injured in 2026

Landmines, unexploded ordnance, and remnants of war continue to pose a deadly threat to civilians in Syria, with at least 253 people killed and 389 others injured since the beginning of the year, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
The group said the victims included 149 men, 94 children, and 10 women, highlighting the particular danger faced by children in areas contaminated by explosive remnants. Among the injured were 233 men, 143 children, and 14 women.
The latest incident involved a young woman who died from injuries sustained in a landmine explosion in the village of Kharab al-Zar‘ in the Jabal Abdul Aziz area, three days after the blast.
The observatory warned that landmines and unexploded weapons left behind by years of conflict remain scattered across agricultural areas, roads, and residential zones, continuing to endanger civilians long after fighting has subsided.
It called for expanded mine-clearance operations, technical surveys of contaminated areas, and the installation of clear warning signs to prevent further casualties, particularly among children.
