Israeli Shelling Hits Western Daraa Near Jamla Amid Broader Regional Escalation
——————————————
Israeli forces shelled the outskirts of Jamla town in the Yarmouk Basin area of western Daraa countryside in southern Syria on Friday, May 15. At least four artillery shells landed near agricultural land and residential areas, prompting panic among local residents, though there were no immediate reports of casualties or significant material damage. The attack occurred amid intensified Israeli reconnaissance flights and military operations over southern Syria.
Syrian state media and regional outlets reported that earlier in the week Israeli forces, including two Merkava tanks and military vehicles, advanced near Wadi Al‑Ruqqad close to Jamla, conducting limited movements under aerial surveillance. These actions are part of what Damascus and local observers describe as repeated Israeli activity in southern Syria, including artillery shelling, incursions, raids, arrests, land bulldozing, and reconnaissance missions — all cited as violations of the 1974 Disengagement Agreement governing the buffer zone along the Syrian‑Israeli frontier.
The Syrian government has condemned the shelling and incursions, asserting that such operations are illegal under international law and calling on the international community to pressure Israel for a complete withdrawal from Syrian territory.
