The Documentation Center for Violations against Shia in Syria condemned the death of ʿOsama Ali Al-Khalaf Al-Hilal, a young Shia man from the village of Hatla in Deir ez-Zor countryside, after being detained for several days along with members of his family. The center called for an independent and transparent investigation to clarify the circumstances of his death and hold those responsible accountable.
According to the center, Al-Hilal died while in the custody of security authorities, and his family was only informed of his death after several days. Upon retrieving the body from the hospital, the family reportedly observed clear signs of severe torture and mistreatment, raising serious concerns about detention conditions and the treatment of prisoners.
The Documentation Center described the incident as a grave violation of human rights, highlighting a pattern of arbitrary arrests and ill-treatment in detention centers. It urged authorities to immediately investigate, hold perpetrators accountable, and implement measures to ensure humane treatment of all detainees in line with international laws and standards.
The center also appealed to the United Nations and international human rights organizations to monitor such cases and protect the rights and dignity of religious minorities in Syria.
