Syrian Government, SDF Conduct Prisoner Exchange in Hasakah

The Syrian government and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have carried out a prisoner exchange in the northeastern city of Al‑Hasakah, marking a step in implementing broader agreements between the two sides.

The exchange was supervised by a team appointed by the Syrian presidency to oversee transitional arrangements in the region. According to verified reports, detainees were released from both Syrian government and SDF‑run facilities.

This step forms part of a larger ceasefire and political agreement reached in January 2026, which aims to stabilize northeastern Syria and coordinate administrative and security responsibilities between Damascus and the SDF. The agreement includes mechanisms for addressing detainee issues, integrating civilian institutions, and establishing security coordination in Al‑Hasakah and surrounding areas.

Officials say further coordination and phased implementation will continue, although there is no independent confirmation of full handover of SDF‑run prisons or large-scale releases beyond the confirmed exchange.

The northeastern region remains politically sensitive and operationally fluid, with ongoing negotiations intended to reduce tensions and promote stability after months of conflict.
