New Mass Grave Discovered at Former Security Building in Northern Syria
………
Local media in Syria reported on Tuesday the discovery of a new mass grave inside a building that previously housed the State Security service in the city of Maaret al-Numan, located in southern Idlib province. The remains were found during ongoing renovation work at the site, prompting security forces to halt construction and seal off the area.
According to the reports, specialized teams were dispatched to examine the location and document the human remains uncovered at the former security facility. Authorities have not yet released details on the number of bodies or the identities of the victims.
The discovery follows a recent announcement by Syria’s Interior Ministry confirming the unearthing of four mass graves along al-Sittin Street in northern Homs, containing the remains of dozens of victims. State media agency SANA has also reported similar findings in various parts of the country in recent months, underscoring the scale of human rights violations linked to years of conflict.
Human rights organizations say such discoveries highlight the lasting humanitarian impact of the war. The Syrian Network for Human Rights has documented approximately 177,000 cases of enforced disappearance since March 2011, reflecting the widespread nature of abuses against civilians during the conflict.
The latest finding has renewed attention on the fate of thousands of missing Syrians and adds pressure on domestic and international efforts aimed at uncovering the truth, identifying victims, and pursuing accountability for crimes associated with mass graves across the country.
