Syria’s Post-Conflict Reconstruction to Cost at Least $216 Billion: World Bank
—————————————-
According to a report by the World Bank, Syria faces a staggering reconstruction bill of at least $216 billion, as the country recovers from over a decade of civil war, Anadolu Agency reported.
The civil conflict caused approximately $108 billion in damage to physical structures and infrastructure — roughly one-third of Syria’s gross capital stock. Infrastructure damage alone amounted to about $52 billion, with residential and non-residential buildings accounting for $33 billion and $23 billion respectively.
The country’s economic capacity remains severely weakened: Syria’s GDP contracted by 53% between 2010 and 2022, falling from an estimated $67.5 billion in 2011 to just $21.4 billion in 2024.
Given the scale of damage and underlying economic collapse, the World Bank warns that Syria lacks the fiscal and institutional capacity to meet the enormous reconstruction needs unaided. The report calls for urgent international mobilization to rebuild essential infrastructure, revive communities, and support the foundation of a resilient post-conflict Syria.
