UK Removes Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham from Terror List
……………..
The British government has removed Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), the former al-Qaeda affiliate that led the Syrian rebel alliance which helped oust President Bashar al-Assad, from its list of banned terrorist organizations, Reuters reported. HTS was designated as a terrorist group in 2017, making it illegal to support or join the organization.
The UK government said the decision aims to facilitate closer engagement with Syria’s new administration and support efforts to dismantle remnants of Assad’s chemical weapons program. Officials added that London would continue to push for progress toward stability and accountability in Syria and the wider region.
The move follows the United States’ earlier decision to revoke HTS’s terrorist designation. Meanwhile, Syria’s Economy Minister Mohammad Nidal al-Shaar expressed hope that Washington would lift remaining sanctions on Damascus in the coming months.
