According to a report from IQNA, Syria has unveiled “Mushaf al-Sham,” a unique, special copy of the Syrian National Quran, at the 62nd Damascus International Fair. The manuscript, considered the world’s largest handwritten Quran, took 20 years to complete and was a collaborative effort involving 62 calligraphers from 17 different countries.
The project, initiated in 2005 under the direction of calligrapher Mohammad Moataz Obeid, was created to reflect both spiritual and artistic values. The completed manuscript measures 2.5 meters in height and 1.55 meters in width per page. It has received official approval from several religious authorities, including the Syrian Ministry of Religious Endowments and Al-Azhar.
The Syrian Ministry of Religious Endowments plans to place the first copy in the Umayyad Mosque in Damascus, with additional copies intended for key Islamic sites like the Masjid al-Haram in Mecca and the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem. The project has also been submitted for a Guinness World Records title.
