The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) is urging accountability for the death of Syrian photojournalist Sari Majid Al-Shoufi, who was killed while reporting on armed combat near the city of Sweida, Jurist News reported. Al-Shoufi, working for the Druze-focused website Suwayda 24, sent distress messages on July 14, 2025, stating his site was under heavy attack and his colleagues had been killed. His death was confirmed ten days later.

The hostilities in Sweida were sparked by an attack on a Druze merchant by Bedouin tribespeople. The UN Syria Commission of Inquiry has expressed concern over the violence and underscored the Syrian authorities’ responsibility to uphold human rights.

Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has also highlighted increasing concerns about journalist safety in Syria, despite earlier assurances from authorities regarding press freedom. Doja Daoud, CPJ’s Levant program coordinator, emphasized the significant dangers journalists face in conflict zones and called upon Syrian authorities to ensure their safety and accountability for attacks.
