Sudan’s Humanitarian Crisis Deepens Amid Escalating Violence in Kordofan and Darfur

Sudan’s humanitarian crisis has worsened due to escalating violence in the Kordofan and Darfur regions, which remain epicenters of the country’s ongoing conflict, Al Arabiya English reported. The United Nations reported that over 450 civilians, including at least 35 children, were killed during attacks around Bara town in North Kordofan province over the weekend of July 12. At least 60 people died in Bara in the past week alone.

Fighting between Sudan’s army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which began in April 2023, has killed more than 40,000 people and triggered one of the world’s worst displacement and hunger crises. Recent months have seen intense clashes concentrated in Darfur and Kordofan.

The UN human rights office confirmed that the RSF killed at least 60 civilians in Bara since July 10, while civil society groups reported up to 300 deaths. A military airstrike on July 17 killed 11 family members in Bara. Meanwhile, army strikes on villages in West Kordofan killed at least 23 civilians and injured dozens more.

Aid agencies report severe access restrictions and suspended operations in many areas. Mercy Corps highlighted the impossibility of movement within Kordofan due to fighting. Displacement is mounting, with hundreds fleeing Kordofan to Darfur, already overwhelmed with displaced populations.

In Darfur, ongoing attacks, shelling, flooding, and disease outbreaks like measles and cholera compound the crisis. Aid workers warn the situation is deteriorating rapidly amid the rainy season and persistent insecurity.
