Mass Grave Uncovered in Rural Hama, Syria
————————
Judicial authorities in Syria’s Hama province have announced the discovery of the remains of 15 civilians, including a woman and a child, in an abandoned well in the town of Maan, in the northeastern countryside of the province. These individuals had been missing for over ten years.

According to Ayman Al-Othman, the Public Prosecutor in Hama, criminal security teams, civil defense, and forensic medicine personnel were dispatched to the site immediately after receiving the report. The remains were exhumed and transported to the forensic medical center for necessary examinations and identification, as reported by the official Syrian News Agency (SANA).

Preliminary investigations suggest the massacre likely occurred in 2013, a period marked by significant escalation by the former regime against the eastern rural areas of Hama. Al-Othman stated that the crime’s characteristics align with documented atrocities committed during that time, vowing to pursue and hold the perpetrators accountable.

This discovery is part of a series of mass graves unearthed since the fall of the Assad regime last December. These findings continue to reveal new chapters of widespread killings and violations that occurred during the early years of the conflict. Earlier, the Internal Security Directorate announced the discovery of a similar mass grave in the northern Homs countryside, containing the remains of 11 individuals killed under similar circumstances, a massacre attributed to the ousted regime’s forces.
