EU Suspends Sanctions on Key Sectors in Syria to Support Reconstruction

The European Union has announced the suspension of sanctions on Syria’s energy, transport, and banking sectors to facilitate the country’s reconstruction following the fall of Bashar Assad’s regime, Anadolu Agency reported.
The EU aims to enhance engagement with Syria’s people and businesses in these critical areas, as well as to support financial transactions for humanitarian and reconstruction efforts.

Key provisions of the decision include lifting sectoral measures affecting oil, gas, electricity, and transport infrastructure. Five Syrian entities, including major banks and Syrian Arab Airlines, have been removed from the EU’s sanctions list. The EU also introduced exemptions for exporting luxury goods for personal use and extended humanitarian exemptions indefinitely.
While the EU maintains sanctions related to the Assad regime, chemical weapons, and drug trade, it expressed hope that the regime’s fall marks a new chapter for Syria, allowing all Syrians to contribute to rebuilding their nation under newly appointed President Ahmad Al-Sharaa.
