Human rights organizations have revealed systematic abuses by Saudi authorities against elderly political detainees, despite laws meant to protect them. The European Saudi Organization for Human Rights highlighted violations of legal guarantees for elderly care, citing neglect and mistreatment in detention.
Notable cases include cleric Salman al-Odah (68), facing a death sentence amid torture and solitary confinement, and academic Awad al-Qarni (66), detained without trial. Elderly women like Aida al-Ghamdi and activist Aziza al-Yousef also face harsh conditions.
The group reported deaths linked to medical neglect and torture, including Dr. Abdullah al-Hamid (70) and Musa al-Qarni (67). Non-Saudi elderly detainees reportedly suffer systemic discrimination in accessing care. The organization urged transparent investigations and humane treatment in line with international human rights standards.
