Pakistani newspaper: The ceremony commemorating the Battle of Karbala is a clear example of the principles of tolerance and coexistence

The semi-official Pakistani newspaper, The News, described the ceremonies commemorating the Battle of Karbala and the martyrdom of the grandson of the Messenger of God, Imam Hussein bin Ali (peace be upon him), as one of the clear examples of the principles of tolerance and coexistence among the citizens of its country.

In an editorial, the newspaper said, “Among the many examples of religious tolerance, peace and harmony between religions, is what is witnessed in cities such as Tharparkar and Umerkot, which have a mixed population and one community culture free of conflicts.”

The article continued that the ceremonies commemorating the martyrs of the Karbala tragedy during the first ten days of the month of Muharram, which it described as “the greatest of tragedies”, is one example of manifestations of brotherhood and peaceful coexistence, as members of the Hindu community in these areas serve food and water in their private temples, while citizens of different religions, regions and ages flock to participate in the Husseini mourning ceremonies and their Hindu hosts provide them with the necessary services with respect and equality.

The author of the article, “Shiva Ram Suthar,” added, “It is customary in the Hindu community that if someone has a new baby, this birth is usually celebrated by striking metal bowls in public, but the people of this community refrain from showing any form of celebration or joy if this birth coincides with the sacred month of Muharram.

Suthar pointed out that “the village of Chorio, located near the Indian border and famous for its Hindu temple and Islamic Husseiniyah, is a clear example of religious harmony among the people of one country.”

In the conclusion of the article, the writer stressed that the importance of applying these principles lies in the fact that if a region is known for peace and brotherhood, future generations will respect all religions and preserve the principles of tolerance, following the footsteps of their past ancestors.
