Two Muslim men were killed and three others injured after a mob attacked five people in West Bengal’s Darjeeling district early Saturday, October 3, over suspicions of cattle theft, police said.
The deceased were identified as Shahid Akhtar, from Chopra in North Dinajpur district, and Sajjad Mohammad from Haryana. The three injured men, Amir Sattar, Akram Khan and Arif Khan, were taken to North Bengal Medical College and Hospital for treatment.
The attack occurred at around 2:30 a.m. near Tarabari village in the Matigara-Bagdogra area, close to the Balason River. The five men were travelling in a pickup van and a car when local residents reportedly became suspicious and began chasing them.
The group was assaulted, while the pickup van was set on fire and the car was damaged. The violence later spread to nearby Dhimal, where the men were attacked again.
Police teams from Matigara, Bagdogra and Panighata intervened and brought the situation under control. A case has been registered, while the bodies of the two deceased were sent for post-mortem examinations.
