Floods in Northern Pakistan Trigger Deadly Disease Outbreaks and Psychological Trauma
————————————
Since August 15, devastating floods in northern Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province have claimed over 400 lives and destroyed critical infrastructure, including homes, roads, bridges, and livestock, Anadolu Agency reported. Beyond the immediate destruction, health experts warn of a growing crisis: outbreaks of waterborne and skin diseases, compounded by widespread psychological trauma.

Medical professionals and relief organizations have established makeshift clinics to address rising cases of diarrhea, gastroenteritis, dengue fever, malaria, and skin infections. Thousands, especially children, are affected, with many still stranded due to blocked roads and damaged bridges.

Dr. Abdul Ghafoor Shoro of the Pakistan Medical Association cautions that disease outbreaks could cause more deaths than the floods themselves if not promptly managed. He urges urgent provision of clean water and hygiene supplies to mitigate this secondary disaster.

Mental health is also a critical concern. Many survivors suffer from severe trauma and stress disorders, with recovery expected to be prolonged. The provincial government has deployed psychiatrists to support affected communities, aiming to address both physical and psychological impacts of the disaster.
