Hakimuddin Sheikh, a retired Kargil war veteran living in Pune, and his family faced harassment when over 30 men accompanied by police arrived at their home demanding proof of Indian citizenship, Muslim Mirror reported.
Sheikh, who served in the Indian Army for 16 years, expressed shock, saying he and his family have lived in India for decades and questioned why they were being asked to prove their nationality. The family was pressured to show documents by 3 a.m. and threatened with being labeled as Rohingyas or Bangladeshis.
When they presented their IDs, they were mocked and told the documents were fake. Sheikh’s nephew added that the police called them again but did not follow through, keeping their documents. Police officials confirmed an investigation is underway, with Commissioner Amitesh Kumar assuring action against the accused. Deputy Commissioner Somay Munde noted the police acted on a tip-off and released the family after verifying their documents, denying involvement of any third party.
