Thousands compelled to flee Gurugram as police crackdown on Bengali-speaking Muslims intensifies

In Gurugram, Haryana, tensions have escalated as police intensify a crackdown on Bengali-speaking migrant workers, predominantly Muslims, accusing them of being undocumented nationals from Bangladesh, Maktoob Media reported. On July 19, at least 74 migrants from West Bengal and Assam were detained and taken to police-designated “holding centres,” described by activists as makeshift detention camps. Residents report that even individuals with valid documents were arbitrarily detained.

Thousands have fled the city amid fears of sudden raids, with many ceasing work due to the risk of arrest while commuting. The crackdown has sparked widespread outrage, with civil society groups condemning it as a targeted operation against Bengali-speaking Muslims, reflecting similar patterns seen in other regions like Delhi.

Most affected residents are daily wage laborers, domestic workers, and auto drivers. Several allege their documents were taken for verification but were later detained regardless. Local activists have intervened to secure some releases, while others continue to face detention and potential deportation.

Civil rights organizations demand an independent inquiry, accountability for authorities involved, and transparency on government guidelines. Political leaders and parties have criticized the crackdown as discriminatory and unconstitutional, highlighting the broader implications for linguistic and religious minorities in India.
