13 Arrested After Honour Killing Video Sparks Outrage in Pakistan
……………….
Thirteen individuals have been arrested in Pakistan’s Balochistan province after a video showing the murder of a couple over an “honour” killing went viral, The Guardian reported. The victims were allegedly killed for marrying without their families’ approval, a practice still present in some conservative regions of Pakistan.
The graphic video, filmed near Quetta, shows the couple being brought to a deserted area by several people. The woman is seen receiving a copy of the Qur’an before being shot at close range, followed by the man. Both bodies were then fired upon multiple times. The footage triggered widespread condemnation and calls for immediate justice.
Provincial authorities confirmed the arrests and announced that further suspects are being pursued. Local police say a tribal elder ordered the killings after the woman’s brother objected to her marriage. The provincial government is leading the investigation, as the victims’ families have not filed complaints.
According to the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, over 400 such killings occurred in 2024, though actual numbers may be higher due to underreporting. Activists continue to urge the government to dismantle tribal power structures that enable such crimes and ensure accountability for those involved.
