Monsoon Rains Kill 57 in Pakistan, More Floods and Landslides Expected
………………..
At least 57 people have died and 99 others have been injured across Pakistan as torrential monsoon rains continue to batter the country, according to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA). The casualties, reported since June 26, include 28 children, 17 men and 12 women.
The NDMA has warned of more heavy rainfall, flash floods and landslides between June 29 and July 5, cautioning that these could disrupt transportation, damage infrastructure and cut off power and communication in hilly regions.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province has recorded the highest number of fatalities with 22 deaths, followed by Punjab with 17, Sindh with 13 and Balochistan with five. Punjab has also reported the highest number of injuries at 50. Most deaths occurred due to flash floods, house collapses, drowning, lightning strikes and electrocution.
Pakistan, with a population exceeding 240 million, is among the countries most vulnerable to climate change. Experts link the increasing frequency of extreme weather events — including droughts, heatwaves and intense rainfall — to global warming.
In 2022, devastating floods caused by heavy rains and glacier melt killed over 1,700 people and inflicted an estimated $33 billion in damages. The NDMA urged citizens to stay updated through its app and avoid unnecessary travel to tourist spots during the monsoon season.
