In a sharp escalation of political tensions, Maulana Fazlur Rehman, head of Pakistan’s Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam party, has threatened to seize the capital Islamabad within a week if the federal government does not address what he called “political injustice and lack of popular legitimacy.”
Speaking at a religious conference in Battagram, Rehman rejected the results of the recent parliamentary elections, claiming they do not reflect the will of the people. He vowed mass mobilization, declaring his party fully ready for street protests and civil disobedience, insisting that “the people are the only source of legitimacy.”
Rehman also launched a fierce attack on the United States, accusing it of “betrayal and manipulation of Muslim nations,” citing crises in Palestine, Libya, Egypt, and Syria. He described U.S. President Donald Trump as an “enemy of peace.” The warning comes amid deepening political divisions and rising public discontent in Pakistan, fueling fears of renewed unrest.
