Delhi Court Halts Demolition in Batla, Grants Muslim Families Reprieve Until July 10

The Delhi High Court has ordered an immediate halt to the demolition of homes in the Batla area, offering a temporary reprieve to 52 Muslim families who have lived in the neighborhood for decades. The ruling, issued on Monday, followed a petition by residents challenging eviction orders issued by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA), which claimed the homes were built “illegally.”

Residents, however, submitted official documents and residency certificates dating back to the 1980s, prompting the court to suspend demolition efforts until July 10, pending a final verdict on the matter. The decision marks a legal setback for the DDA, which has faced criticism for allegedly bypassing due process and targeting specific communities.

Critics have accused the authority of carrying out selective demolition policies that could be perceived as discriminatory. While some officials have framed the demolitions as part of a broader redevelopment initiative, residents argue that the plan threatens the neighborhood’s historical character and community fabric. Many see the fight for their homes not just as a legal battle, but as a defense of dignity and heritage in the heart of India’s capital.
