Indian PM rejects US mediation in India-Pakistan ceasefire talks
……………………
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi clarified in a phone call with US President Donald Trump that the May ceasefire between India and Pakistan was achieved solely through direct military communication, without any US mediation, DW reported.
Indian diplomat Vikram Misri stated Modi firmly rejected claims of third-party involvement, emphasizing India’s long-standing policy against foreign mediation in Kashmir-related matters.
The 35-minute call was the first since Trump offered condolences after the April 22 Pahalgam attack, which killed 26 civilians. Modi also stressed that cross-border terrorism is now considered an act of war by India, with counter-terror operations ongoing.
Trump previously claimed credit for brokering the ceasefire and encouraging a focus on trade. However, Modi told him no trade discussions occurred during that period.
While Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif thanked Trump for his role, India remains firm on bilateral handling of the conflict. Modi declined an invitation to visit Washington due to prior diplomatic commitments, but both leaders agreed to meet soon.
