Ex-PM Imran Khan Sentenced to 14 Years for Alleged Corruption

Former Prime Minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan, has been sentenced to 14 years in prison for alleged corruption, following a conviction alongside his wife, Bushra Bibi, who received a seven-year sentence, The Guardian reported.

The couple was found guilty of illegally acquiring valuable plots of land through a deal with property tycoon Malik Riaz, involving allegations of laundering $239 million.

The accountability court, set up inside Adiala prison in Rawalpindi, imposed a fine of 1 million Pakistan rupees (£2,900) on Khan. This ruling marks another setback for Khan, who has spent over 18 months in jail and faces over 100 legal cases, including serious charges like murder and terrorism.

Khan’s party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), condemned the verdict as a “black day” for justice in Pakistan, claiming it reflects a lack of judicial independence. Khan has vowed to appeal the decision, asserting that he will not engage in any backdoor deals for his release.
