Deadline for Afghan Refugee Cards in Pakistan Extended Until July 2025

Pakistan’s federal government announced on Tuesday an extension for the validity of Proof of Registration (PoR) cards held by Afghan migrants until July 30, 2025, Afghanistan International reported yesterday.

Approximately 1.3 million Afghans possess these ID cards in Pakistan. This decision comes as the Supreme Court resumes hearings regarding petitions against the mass deportation of Afghan refugees initiated in October 2023.

The government has assured that all registered Afghan refugees, including those with Afghan Citizen Cards (ACC), will receive full legal protection and will not face detention or deportation. Following a July 22, 2024, announcement from the Ministry of States and Frontier Regions, the deadline for PoR and ICC cards was initially set to June 30, 2025.

In recent weeks, tensions have escalated between Islamabad and the Taliban, leading to increased efforts by Pakistani security forces to arrest and deport Afghan refugees, particularly in Islamabad, where house-to-house searches have been reported.
