Security Forces Raid Imran Khan Supporters in Islamabad

Pakistani security forces conducted a midnight raid on supporters of former Prime Minister Imran Khan after over 50,000 protesters breached security barriers to demand his release, The Guardian reported yesterday. The unrest, which saw at least seven fatalities and numerous injuries, escalated as Khan’s wife, Bushra Bibi, led a convoy into Islamabad’s fortified red zone.

Despite a government lockdown and heavy police presence, protesters clashed with security forces, who deployed teargas and rubber bullets. Authorities reported more than 100 injuries among police, with one officer killed in the violence. PTI, Khan’s party, claims excessive police force led to the deaths of two supporters.

The government had warned against reaching the red zone, offering an alternative protest site outside the capital, which PTI has yet to accept. Khan, imprisoned since August 2023, faces over 100 charges, which he denies, asserting they are politically motivated.
