Lebanon’s Health System Under Severe Strain Amid Escalating Conflict, Aid Agencies Warn

Lebanon’s healthcare system is facing mounting pressure as ongoing hostilities drive a surge in casualties and displacement, prompting urgent warnings from international organizations about critical shortages of medical supplies and the risk of further deterioration in services.

The World Health Organization has cautioned that hospitals across the country are operating at or beyond capacity, with essential trauma supplies rapidly depleting. Officials warn that items such as bandages, antibiotics, and anesthetics could run out within days if resupply efforts are not accelerated.

The crisis follows a sharp escalation in violence that has resulted in hundreds of deaths and more than a thousand injuries in recent days, according to figures cited by health authorities and reported by Reuters. The influx of wounded has overwhelmed emergency units, forcing hospitals to activate mass casualty protocols.

Healthcare workers and aid agencies say the strain is compounded by widespread displacement. Large numbers of civilians have fled affected areas, placing additional pressure on already limited medical infrastructure and humanitarian services.

The WHO has warned that without immediate replenishment of supplies and sustained humanitarian access, the situation could lead to preventable deaths, including among patients with treatable conditions. Efforts are underway in coordination with Lebanese authorities to redistribute available resources between hospitals to mitigate shortages.

The crisis has also disrupted broader public services, including transportation and supply chains, further complicating relief efforts and access to care.
