UN Chief Warns Southern Lebanon Could Become “Barren Land” Amid Israeli Airstrikes

The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, has warned that continued Israeli airstrikes could turn southern Lebanon into a “barren land,” expressing concern over the growing humanitarian and infrastructural impact of the attacks.
Guterres made the remarks during a press conference in Beirut at the end of his visit to the country. He said Lebanon is experiencing widespread destruction as a result of the military escalation and cautioned that the effects of the bombardment could spread to additional areas. He specifically noted that Beirut’s southern suburbs face the risk of further airstrikes and potential large-scale destruction.
Speaking to reporters, Guterres stressed that “the only solution is diplomacy and dialogue,” calling for an end to the bombing and hostilities. He added that the Lebanese people “did not choose war but were drawn into it.”
